People find many barriers to keep them from trying yoga! Some of these barriers are misconceptions.
Let’s talk about all you really need to get started:
1. A Place To Practice
This is pretty obvious, but if you’re not planning to take a class at a studio, you’ll need to create your own spot to practice. Find a place that’s quiet and without distractions.
But remember: there are always distractions. Yoga just helps us deal with them better.
2. A Yoga Mat
You can buy a yoga mat at any Wal-Mart in the U.S. All you need is a non-slip mat. It doesn’t need to be expensive. You’ll find what you like as you practice.
3. A Book or Video to Explain How To Do Poses (Safely)
I recommend Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube.
You can always get a book with photos and step-by-step instructions for getting into the poses. Try your library and get started for free.
4. Keep An Open Mind
Yoga isn’t about flexibility; practicing it will increase your flexibility over time.
Yoga also isn’t about touching your toes or twisting into a pretzel. It’s not a workout or a religion. It’s a practice that doesn't compete with any religion.
Don’t disqualify yourself from practicing yoga before you even get started.
5. Know Your Limits + Contraindications
Yoga can be tough the first time! You may meet muscles you’ve never met before. This is no excuse to push beyond your comfort zone! You don’t want to injure yourself. Know what your body can’t do.
It’s always OK to not do a pose in a yoga class.
Poses have modifications. Yoga props help us do poses that don’t come naturally.
Don't do any poses in which you find yourself losing connection to your breath. Everything in yoga is done in coordination with your breath.
