You're Brand New To Twitter & Content Creation—Here's How To "Up Your Engagement" On Twitter
Heather Larson @WriterHeatherL

I get it. You want to go all-in on strategy first!

You're going to "win" Twitter and gain a massive audience overnight with the magic of your content.

But that's not how it works.

Reframe This Because You Aren't Seeking "Engagement" Right Now

Don't call it engagement; call it talking to people.

You're here to make friends. Build relationships. Foster connection.

Let the vanity metrics go for a while.

Why Are You Here?

No one likes an "audience builder" or "engagement farmer."

Don't be that person.

Show up. Help. Offer insights.

The Right Way To "Engage" On Twitter

I built a personal account to 4K at one time and several brand accounts belonging to radio stations between 2007 and 2019.

How did I do it?

By being f*cking social!

There's No Magical Formula, Sorry

Hypefury is like shooting fish in a barrel, yes—that SaaS makes it easy to get likes, comments, etc.

But is this what you really want?

As someone who ditched a 4K account (go look, it's @heatherlarson) I can tell you that 4K is cool but it wasn't getting me the right traffic.

You Get Out What You Put Into Social Media

Don't just schedule; show up.

Don't just post links to that thing you wrote, interact. Reply to others and join a conversation. Retweet. Quote tweet.

You're not here for you. You're here to serve others.

If You Act Like You're Here For You, You'll Drive People Away

Worse—you'll get called out for the "look at me" behavior.
