Want to increase your performance, but also want to do what is popular? Don't even try it.
These goals are not compatible. Always pick performance. Understand that you will be going against the grain more times than not. That's okay. Performance is the measurement of your success. Not how cool you look.
To the uninitiated, "FOMO" is the fear of missing out on what others are doing. It can be social media, events, or anything really. FOMO kills productivity and performance. The more you jump around, the less you get done. And the less you get done, the less likely it is that you will achieve your goals.
Here are some questions to ask yourself when FOMO starts setting in:
Will this activity, although popular at the moment, help me achieve my goals?
What is the best use of my time right now? Time is a limited resource. If you've planned properly, changing mid-course almost always derails your progress.
What is the most important task that I need to do? Make a list of priorities as you start the day. Then get to it.
If the answer to any of those questions is "no", then it's probably not worth your time. Do what you set out to do and avoid the noise. There's a lot of noise out there.
It's one thing to be open to other ideas, it's another thing to let those ideas derail you from your goals.
