The 1 Reason Most People Quit the Funeral Business: Burnout

I have been a licensed funeral director for five years.

I admit that it is not that long. I know apprentices, funeral directors, embalmers, and owners that have been in the business from 1 month to almost 50 years. All of them have one thing in common: Burnout.

The way to combat burnout is to escape. Find inner peace. Relax. Here are three reasons funeral service professionals experience burnout.

  • Reason #1: The long hours. Sometimes we are awake and working 24 hours. Long days, night funerals, and death calls in the middle of the night.

  • Reason #2: Demanding families. Not every grieving family will be grateful or work with you on their funeral. Some of them deal with death by taking it out on funeral directors.

  • Reason #3: Co-workers. You can make great money, and be in a wonderful community; but if you can't trust or get along with your co-workers, every day will be a struggle.

This is why your time off and away from work can be refreshing and a constant reminder to take care of yourself. Mentally and physically.

I've been a licensed funeral director for only five years and have experienced burnout quite a few times already. But I always come back stronger, ready, willing, and able.
