Why You Should Play God of War
Cole Mathis

Back in 2018, I played the new God of War for the first time. Though many other fantastic video games released in that same year, God of War was able to stand out on its own as breathtaking. After the initial play through, I knew that it had become one of my favorite video games of all time. That was back then.

Reliving the Story

In anticipation for the next game, entitled God of War: Ragnarok, I decided to replay the 2018 game. It had been over four years since I had last played God of War, so last month I decided to begin replaying it. After beating it for that second time, I can now confidently say that it is my favorite game of all time.

The Characters

Kratos is the protagonist of of the entire God of War series. I believe him to be one of the most well written protagonists in any video game. Kratos is a god who has done terrible deeds in the past, but he wants to move on from that former self. His son, Atreus, is a troublesome boy. Kratos has to work throughout the game to make sure that Atreus does not become violent as he once was.

The game's main antagonist is a god named Baldur. Baldur was cursed by his own mother to never feel anything physically and hates her for it. Kratos must work together with Atreus, in order to end the cycle of violence and stop Baldur from killing his mother. All of the relationships of these characters are fantastically written.

A Beautiful Experience

The atmosphere, the musical score, the visuals, the story; everything in God of War works together to create a beautiful experience. The game starts as a story of a father and a son hiking to the top of the highest peak in Midgard to spread the ashes of the recently deceased mother. This story builds and becomes an exciting adventure.

If you are interested in Norse mythology, God of War is perfect for you. I would highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys video games. Have you ever played the 2018 God of War?
