Giving a thumbs down to a bad driver is much more effective than flipping them off. Here's why: (1/6)

  1. Flipping people off just incites rage. It encourages a how-dare-they-insult-me mentality that leads to anger, which leads to emotionally distressed and distracted drivers, which leads to reckless and unsafe drivers. (2/6)

  1. It has an element of surprise. No one expects an adult to give a thumbs down. (3/6)

  1. It leads the other driver to feel a sense of shame, because the initial driver is giving an "I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed" vibe. This leads the other driver to self-reflect: "Maybe I did do something wrong." (4/6)

  1. People react better to receiving a thumbs downs than to being given the bird. If they stole your opportunity to get in the turn lane in time, they may inch up a bit to give you room to try and squeeze into that lane. (5/6)

  2. Flipping someone off is a rude insult. Giving someone a thumbs-down is a neutral expression of disappointment. (6/6)
