Setting a Goal Helps with Depression.
Mario Gutierrez

The brain has evolved to keep us alive, giving us the instinct to complete tasks. The same concept applies to animals; they hunt or scavenge in order to eat, mate to reproduce, and sleep to rest which leads to one common concept; they all have goals to work toward. Humans are much the same though more complex as we have structured interwoven societies in order to make survival easier. Nowadays we have careers that pay our expenses and luxuries, we have an extremely complex social web that also serves as another field with its own objectives and motives. Drifting through your everyday life without a purpose goes against your own biology and psychology and the comfort modern society has provided has made that issue one that is much more prominent.

Not setting goals for yourself, such as hobbies, working towards a career, saving up for a wanted luxury, etc., will leave us empty feeling as if we have no purpose which can bring up or worsen depression. Not having anything to work towards leaves our minds prone to aimlessly drift off into possibly dark places, giving us feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. This will worsen the depressive symptoms adding more negativity to an already negative mindset. It makes us feel as if we have no purpose. Human minds are not made to sit and think for extended periods of time without taking action.

We have to divide our efforts into positive thoughts, and the rest into personal objectives in order to feel fulfillment. We also need the discipline to stick to tasks and feel accomplished. This will lead to mental growth, maturity, and a greater understanding of life and its structure.
