Day 11: Why Journaling Should Be Part of Your Self-Care Routine
Melody Corredera

Journaling is a great technique for self-care. Some even view it as a form of therapy as journaling can help clear the mind, release stress, and improve mental health.

How to Get Started

First, pick a journal. This can be a newly purchased one or a lightly used notebook. There are a variety of different styles to choose from. You can even find one with designs on the cover or inspirational words. There are even notebooks specifically for self-care that have prompts written inside, which can be very helpful for beginners.

Start Off On a Positive Note

Write down the good parts of your day. Even the little things count. Did you have a nice cup of joe in the morning, spend time with friends and family, walked outside for 15 minutes or finished your homework? Write it down! This practice can help increase gratitude and optimism in your everyday life. Reflecting on positive experiences will bring you great joy and will help you treasure special memories.

Reflect on the Bad

Some days can weigh down your emotions or increase stress levels. It's important to write down your feelings when you feel like imploding with the negative emotions you're keeping inside. Discuss the negative aspects of your day, which can include interactions with people, a heavy workload, a stressful conversation, overwhelming anxiety, or even just failing to check a chore off your to-do list.

Analyze the Good and the Bad

Ask yourself questions. Why did one aspect of your day make you feel good and another made you feel bad? Is there something holding you back from achieving your goals? Is someone hurting your feelings whether they know it or not? It's important to think about the connections we make with certain actions or people and how they impact our emotional well-being.

Brainstorm Solutions

Now that you've reflected on your day and analyzed positive and negative experiences, it's time to think of ways to improve. If someone is causing you stress, consider having an honest conversation with them and set any necessary boundaries. If there's an obstacle in your path to achieving a goal, create an action plan to overcome it. Remember there's always a solution to every problem, some may just take a little more creativity than others.

Overall, journaling offers a multitude of benefits. This can be a great outlet for self-expression and a way to improve mental health. Therefore, it should be part of your self-care routine.
