How To Defeat Defeatism (Part 1)
Deep Voice Man

In order to achieve goals, we need to build grit. However, constant failure can lead to dejection, where we feel like quitting. So I searched for the best ways to survive a bad funk and these are my findings:

Focus On The Process

Cold calling expert, Art Sobczak, advises salespeople to focus on the process and not on outcomes. Fixating on any one result can lead to stress, frustration and anxiety. Since any one result is out of our control, it makes no sense to attach our well-being and self-esteem to any one at bat. We should derive happiness from our abundant, consistent, habitual, endless, daily, recorded tries, what we can control.

Only focusing on the process reminds us it's a numbers game and to detach ourselves from any one outcome. The results will take care of itself. Trust that, on average, you'll get a positive result for a certain amount of bad outings. Failing is part of the game. Babe Ruth never worried about batting slumps, because the law of averages meant that he'd be hitting home runs real soon.

Love The Process

When you love the process, whatever end result you desire will be just an add-on or side effect. Many entrepreneurs and entertainers love what they do and would work for free. Any large amounts of money they earn is seen as a bonus.

For many celebrities, intrinsic motivation kept them going a long time before they made it big. Many continue doing what they love long after earning their first $1,000,000. They could retire but they thoroughly enjoy the work they do.

3 Oprah Winfrey quotes that drive the point home: "The reason I've been able to be so financially successful is my focus has never, ever for one minute been money." "You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job and not be paid for it." "If you can get paid for doing what you love, every paycheck is a bonus."

Studies show that being engaged in work we love makes us happier than the results we earn. We love training and playing more than the trophy, salary and recognition.
