Build Credibility Through Storytelling
Cortnae del Valle

Storytelling comes in many forms - verbal histories passed down through generations, novels, literature, or film - the term most likely has a different connotation for everyone. But in today's environment where we are fed content nonstop 24 hours a day, storytelling takes on a different personality. It becomes a way to provide insights that gain a reader's attention and provide a connection with them in a way that is more than a 60-second reel or visual post. Although that type of content can grab attention, to build your audience and have readers keep returning to you to learn more, you must build a connection with them

Embracing the idea of sharing a bit of yourself shows your vulnerability and makes customers feel more comfortable with you and what you are selling. Telling the story of what inspired you to do what you do, or sharing an anecdote that relates to the problem you are solving builds credibility with your customers who will begin to see you as an expert whom they can rely on because you demonstrate your grasp of the topics you share.

Me? an Expert?

It often feels uncomfortable for us to proclaim that we are experts in anything, and in reality, we really shouldn't because that will not help to gain the trust of readers. When someone starts a conversation by proclaiming that they are the best at what they do, many will become skeptical or intimidated. Rather the best way is to show it by sharing your knowledge and experience with a topic. What are some ways to do this?

  • Write a story that describes what inspires you to do the work you do

  • Create an infographic that visually demonstrates a framework that you promote

  • Create an essay that discusses the problem you solve, what experiences allowed you to grow your understanding and why it works

Still feel like you don't know enough?

Another method for demonstrating your knowledge on a topic is to share information from others who are deemed as experts and break down the information in a way that is unique to you and perhaps makes it more digestible for your audience. There is no limit to the information that is available for you to work with. Just make sure that your sources are credible and that you do in fact understand the information well enough to provide insights that are useful.
