The 5 Steps to Decide What Martial Art to Pursue and Fits You in Your Early 20s
Ibrahim Abuisba

Step 1: Define Your Objectives

Ask yourself what your goals and objectives for practicing a Martial Art is.

Reflect on your motivations and aspirations, some common ones being Self-defense, getting in shape, competing, personal development, or even a combination of these!

When you know your "why," it makes choosing a Martial Art to cater to that a whole lot easier to figure out and more enjoyable to practice.

Step 2: Research and Compare Styles

Start researching the different styles and pick a specific art that catches your eye, and you can see yourself wanting to learn more about it.

Your best bet is going down a rabbit hole exploring different styles such as Karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai, MMA, etc.

Compare these styles and write down the pros and cons of each, really with the focus of finding something that catches your eye. Because whatever strikes you first, might be the one your gut wants to test out first.

Step 3: Consider Practical Factors

Things such as location, class schedule, and affordability make choosing what Martial Art you want to pursue a serious factor.

Take time to evaluate the real-life implications of training in the Martial Art you're leaning toward in relation to your work/school schedule, especially considering the aspect of being in your Early 20s and life being hectic.

The importance of finding a gym that caters to YOU, is more crucial than people may think it is in the beginning, especially considering the notion that you want training in a Martial Art to be easily implementable into your schedule.

Step 4: Explore Your Options

I can't say enough about how important it is to not marry one martial art!

The great thing I've found regarding Martial Arts gyms is how universal it is all over the world to take advantage of trial classes and lucrative memberships, where people gyms are willing to work with you and want you to find what you love.

Keep an open-mind and be adventurous in finding the right atmosphere, teaching style, and compatibility with your training partners and coaches for an optimal experience training Martial Arts.

Step 5: Seek Guidance and Feedback

Don't be afraid to ask questions and seek advice from the people around you to decide what Martial Art you want to delve into.

One of the coolest things about training in Martial Arts is the fact that no one knows EVERYTHING about each specific art and everyone training alongside you is on their own journey figuring it all too.

You'll never be alone in your path to learning the different facets of each Martial Art and take advantage of the knowledge other people have when looking to figure out what Martial Art is right for you. Or any question for that matter!
