When I hear "Apologetics," I think, like many, of someone apologizing for something or having to rationalize it. This is not the case.
The word apologetics comes from the Greek word apologia, which means simply "to give a defense" or an answer given in reply. An extreme example would be like a courtroom defense with one side asking the other a question and the answer is given from the other side.
When it comes to Christianity, people have questions
Is the Bible true? Does God exist? How can we know God is good? are some of the common ones. If God is good, why is there evil? is a deeper one that requires more explanation. This is where apologetics comes in.
There's also a bigger role for Christian Apologists
There are many influential people who work hard to dismiss, bring down and even attack the Bible. Some go so far as to spread false teachings about Jesus and His works. The mission of Christian apologetics is to combat these actions and promote Christian truth.
For me, someone not skilled nor educated like G.K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, or Peter Kreeft, I try to take a more uncomplicated approach.
"Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence." – 1 Peter 3:15-16
With "isms" like naturalism and atheism becoming in vogue and normalized in today's culture, I just want to be prepared to share the Good News as well as I can. While I won't "wow" anyone with my intelligence, I can hope to "woo" with my passion and honesty.
