Want to learn how to use AI?
Here is an easy framework for learning to use Gen AI to solve everyday problems!
I have been practicing with Generative AI for the past 18 months.
Along the way, I have done all sorts of things to try to get better:
- Read "A Busy Professional’s Field Guide to Prompt Engineering" by Dr Kenneth E Long
- Listened to the "AI Advantage" podcast weekly
- Joined three different AI Communities on Substack and LinkedIn
- Took free courses on ChatGPT and Claude.Ai
- Failed spectacularly (and learned from it) over a 100 times
And all of these things helped me a ton.
But if I had to start all over again (as a beginner), this is the simple framework I wish I had for learning how to effectively use Gen AI:
Step 1: Start With Your Problem, Not The Tool
Write down exactly what you're trying to achieve before you ever open an AI tool - the clearer you are about your problem, the better the AI can help solve it.
Step 2: Have A Conversation, Don't Just Ask Questions
Treat the AI like a smart colleague - share context, ask follow-ups, and refine answers together because the magic happens in the back-and-forth.
Step 3: Use The "Refine and Define" Method
Take the AI's first response as a starting point, then guide it to be more specific to your needs by sharing what worked, what didn't, and what you need differently.
When you're first starting out, this is all that matters. Forget about advanced prompting techniques or complex system messages. Master these basics first.
The real secret? The best way to learn AI isn't by studying AI - it's by solving real problems you actually care about.
