"The Surrender Experiment" by Michael Singer is the best book I've read on meditation.
It's a memoir that follows Singer's journey from a penniless yogi in the woods to the CEO of a billion-dollar company.
This book significantly changed how I see myself. Here's why:
Reason #1: Freedom through awareness
The self is the observer of thoughts and emotions.
Just as we filter out much of what we see and hear in the world around us, we can also choose to ignore many of our internal thoughts and feelings.
This realization frees us from the constant chatter of the mind.
Reason #2: Discovery through meditation
Meditation helps us develop self-awareness.
By focusing on something as simple as our breath, we learn to recognize when thoughts and emotions try to distract us from the present moment.
The goal is to sustain this awareness continually, using life as a practice ground to release thoughts and emotions non-judgmentally as they arise.
Reason #3: Fulfillment through service
Past and future are constructs of the mind; only the present truly exists.
Therefore, we should seek to elevate the present moment at every opportunity.
By committing to serving the present, we open ourselves to joy and fulfillment.
