Microsoft was born with its original name, Micro-Soft, a combination of "microcomputer" and "software." The company changed the spelling of its name to Microsoft in 1976.

Bill Gates, along with his childhood friend Paul Allen, had a passion for computers. They saw the potential for PCs to change people's lives, and in 1975, they founded Microsoft.

In the beginning, Microsoft focused on providing software for early PCs, such as MS-DOS, which became the dominant OS for IBM-compatible PCs. With the launch of Windows, they became the leading PC software company.

Despite challenges, including intense competition & accusations of anti-competitive biz practices, Microsoft persevered. Today, it's a $2T company with a broad portfolio of products & services touching every aspect of modern life.
