How I Got Interested In indie iOS App development
Aivars Meijers 🚢

I wouldn't call myself an expert in indie App development.

However, I have spent 3+ years reading and learning about building indie mobile Apps. And I spent many hours on weekends and mornings building and launching them in the AppStore. Most of them failed, but you should be lucky only once to build a successful side business.

Here's how I first got interested in indie Apps:

In 2016, I built and released a few simple iOS apps to have them in my portfolio and started a freelancing business. I didn't pay much attention to my Apps after releasing them. The Apps generated nearly nothing revenue, and I had them only as portfolio items.

A few years later, on August 2, 2018, I was on the beach in Bulgaria. The weather was great, and I played with the kids in waves. My AppleWatch vibrated from an incoming notification. I looked at that and saw an incoming payment from Apple Inc. I checked an iPhone and found out that over the 1+ year, my forgotten portfolio Apps generated enough money to to reach minimum payment threshold and I got my first paycheck from Apple - 129.07 Euro

Since then I'm looking how to grow income revenue stream from my own apps, because money keep comming even when I'm sleeping.

So my goal over the next year is:

Last year I spent time improving conversation rate from free to paid users in exiting products. This year my focus will be on AppStore optimization and marketing.

Big part of indie App or solopreneur product launching is market research to find better product ideas and marketing to promote them.

I will keep learning how to get better in that. Last year I managed to double my App revenue, will try to repeat that again 🤞
