Should you be an HR generalist or specialist?
Here's a novel idea:
Be BOTH!
Here's my take on this. Be a generalist, but also SPECIALIZE by finding your ONE BIG THING and then excel at it.
An example:
An HR generalist I know specializes in building teams. She's a pro at using Myers-Briggs, the Kolbe assessment and other tools to help groups enhance their team's effectiveness.
She's in huge demand.
Her team building expertise has opened the door for her to have a positive impact in her organization with groups...to rave reviews.
She's long believed that #HR generalists are a dime a dozen. And, finds the HR field too broad and multi-faceted to become an expert in every single thing.
So she doesn't even try.
Instead, her advice to HR generalists is while it’s okay to be a jack of all trades - MAKE SURE you’re the absolute master of ONE.
Whether you agree with her or not, there's an important point here...
You will greatly enhance your HR career if you become known as the TRUSTED AUTHORITY in ONE thing.
Aim to become so awesome at this ONE THING that people can’t wait to share with others how great you are.
And then watch new opportunities land at your doorstep.
Just my take.
