The 7 Things Every Woman Lawyer Needs To Know To Attain Career Clarity & Avoid Personal Regrets
Alexandra Slack

There are a million things to do as a lawyer and finding time for career strategising is usually not one of them.

So for all the women lawyers who need a bite-sized steer towards greater career clarity, here are the 7 things all of my women lawyer clients have worked on to achieve career success on their terms without triggering future personal regrets.

1. Know Your Personal Values

The foundation of professional success is personal development. Understanding yourself deeply enables you to recognise what you value, to know the things that light you up and what you want more (and less) of in life and work.

2. Know What You Want To Achieve

Honestly reflecting on what you want to achieve in life and in work is vital. You need to know your destination in order to arrive at it. Get curious and ask yourself: "What does success mean to me?". "How could my personal and professional life fit together better?", "What would I need to make this work?". Start to actively listen to the answers coming from within.

3. Know Why You Want To Achieve It

Understanding why it matters to you that you achieve your work and life goals is also crucial. Purpose is a powerful motivator which can keep you on track, and diminish the risk of regrets down the line.

4. Decision-Making

Career clarity means not only identifying the path. You must also choose it. Learn the skill of decision-making. Commit to the course, but also know that you can course correct on the way.

5. Know What Your Red Lines Are

Establishing boundaries that reflect and support your values and career and life goals further diminishes the risk of regret. But remember, boundaries are only as effective as your ability to express them and re-establish them when needed.

6. Express Yourself

Practise the words, phrases and the conversations you need to have with yourself and with others to express yourself clearly in the workplace and at home. The greater your capacity to have a voice, the more space you create in your career and life for the things you want.

7. Build Confidence Through Courageous Action-Taking

Taking intentional steps towards what you want in your career and life can feel daunting at first. But, with action comes insight, which can provide further clarity. Asking yourself: "What's the next, smallest step I can take?" helps keep you in motion, which can build confidence over time.

So let me ask you, which of these steps would help you increase your career clarity?
