Calling All College Students, Here Are Easy Life Changes That Can Help You Save the Environment
Alex Magda

I think it is safe to say that the problems in our environment are not going to change with action from just one person.

It's just not possible. That doesn't mean we can't do nothing though. Think of how many people are in the world, consuming different products and living different routines. Those habits don't have to change, but the resources they use can. Little switches like that won't alter your lifestyle, but can help the environment.

Switching up the brands

There are some brands that are both affordable and sustainable, and better for you honestly. Supporting brands that are committed to helping their environmental impact, and yours, can really make a difference.

When looking to buy products, whether its beauty, lifestyle or clothing, there are tons of brands that are just as good as the one you are using now, and are also making a positive impact on the world.

On top of the switch to using recycled packaging, a lot of beauty and cleaning brands are starting to sell refillable products as well, meaning you only have to buy the bottle or can once, instead of every time.

The goal of sustainable brands is to get you to still use your everyday products, but in a way that is less wasteful to the environment.

Shop sustainably

Fast fashion is a hot topic in the environmental discussion.

There are so many brands that mass produce clothing at an excessive rate, only for them to be worn once or twice

Instead of buying from companies like that, turn to other sources that can get you the clothes you want without harming the environment

  • Thrifting: you would be amazed at some of the things you can find at your local thrift store!

  • Depop/Poshmark: these are two apps that are basically online thrift stores. You can find loads of name-brand, secondhand clothing from all around.

  • Invest in good clothes: Sometimes, the price does reflect the quality. Instead of buying multiple of the same t-shirt, jeans, or shorts, it's a lot more sustainable to put the money towards something that will last you a long time, and can be versatile for many occasions.

Eat less red meat!

This is one of the biggest and easiest switches I know.

The meat industry has a lot of negative effects on the environment, mainly with greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation.

Consuming less red meat is a small change in your daily life, but can make a big difference if we all do it.

This doesn't mean everyone should stop eating it completely, that will never happen. Having one less meal a week that uses red meat though, can get you in the habit and help the environment. There are also plenty of meat substitutes that still taste good and don't have as negative of an effect.

There are simple ways to live your life more sustainable, without changing everything completely. Taking the small steps can help us as individuals fight the problems with the environment.
