As a new digital creator, I didn't know consistency came with a price: paralyzing Imposter Syndrome. The Imposter Syndrome was like a wild parrot constantly reminding me I am no expert, I am a fraud posting bits of digital nonsense.
But slowly, I learned how to cage it.
Here's how:
#1 Frame yourself as a guide and not an expert - When you set it this way, you are likely to share information in a more genuine way. You don't have to put on a mask to show that you are a professional. I used to think this was the only way but let me tell you, that approach can be very exhausting. Be honest. Embrace being a guide and not a guru.
#2 Reach out to other digital creators - Reaching out to other newbie creators can give you tremendous validation that combats Imposter Syndrome. When I did this, l found out that we all have the exact same sentiments. It validated my life choices and commitments as a digital creator. I made sense after all!
#3 Realize that everyone is busy worrying about themselves - When we dive so deep in our work, we overthink a lot and invite self-doubt. We end up thinking that everyone's against us. This exact thing happened to me. My solution was to take a step back and internalize that in reality, everyone else is thinking about their own problems.
I concluded: surely they have more important work than judging every choice of words I write.
#4 Talk about it - Finally, confront your fears by talking about it. What a meta post right? Share to anyone and everyone you feel the Imposter Syndrome! You'll be surprised how fast it goes away.
To sum it up
Imposter Syndrome can be a real challenge for new digital creators. With these 4 steps, you can learn to cage that parrot.
My parrot still says hi, at least now we're friends!
