Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Volunteer program.

For awhile, I never saw the point of volunteering. I wasn’t getting paid and I had to talk to people, which I didn’t like doing since I was always a shy person. So I never really thought it was important.

When I entered high school, I was required to have volunteer hours in order to graduate. I was dreading this.

After talking to my counselor and other classmates, they explained to me what you could gain from helping your community.

I never realized that I could volunteer in things that I liked to do.

For example, I volunteered at my dance studio’s summer camp. I enjoyed dancing and working with kids. So it was perfect for me.

However, I noticed that I was staying my bubble, again. I wasn’t letting myself try new things because I like staying my circle, and rather just stick to what I like.

It wasn’t until my mother told me “You will never grow as a person if you don’t try things that you aren’t familiar with.” And this stuck with me.

I knew I needed to give back to my community other than helping at my dance studio. I started to look into food drives, beach cleanup, and other ways to help out.

The one that really stuck out to me was the idea to volunteer at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do since high school, but covid got in the way.

It caught my eye because I am majoring in Nursing and want to work with kids. So this will really make me be sure if this is what I want to do.

By doing this activities, I realized how much I appreciated helping out my community.

Volunteering helped me open up as a person, make new connections with people, make new experiences, and just mature. Others might not see it as a risk, but for me this was a risk, since I am an introvert.

As I mentioned before, I need to take on these challenges in order to grow as a person
