1: The Text of the Second Amendment
The text of the second amendment seems pretty straight forward to me.
A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
It is hard to get simpler than the "right of the people."
2: Interpretation of the Second Amendment
All rights are individual rights.
When we break down each right that the founding fathers enumerated, they all came down to an individual freedom, including the second. The federal government was given strict lanes that they have to stay between as to not infringe on any rights that were granted to us by our creator. The militia at the time of the founding was believed to be every able-bodied man that was willing to defend themselves against enemies foreign and domestic.
So, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed, sounds pretty straight forward to me.
3: Supreme Court Rulings Regarding the Second Amendment
The Supreme Court now has showed in multiple cases that the original intent of the second amendment is an individual right.
The 2008 ruling of District of Columbia v. Heller verified that we had an individual right to own and use firearms for self-defense in the home.
The 2022 ruling of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen showed that the ability to carry a pistol for self defense was protected by the second amendment.
As more cases work their way thru the court system, I believe that we will see the second amendment continue to get stronger.
