Before Covid, I could read 3-5 books at the same time.
They were a mix of genres: fantasy, sci-fi, history, self-help.
During the pandemic, my reading time dwindled. I was lucky if I finished one book a month.
Over the last month, my interest in reading fiction has re-emerged. To ease myself back into the reading habit, I've returned to old favorites. Re-reading them has brought me joy and sparked my imagination.
The three books I'm re-reading are:
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
You can't go wrong with the hero's journey Frodo Baggins undertakes to destroy the "One Ring Who Rules Them All". Gandalf! Aragorn! Dwarves and Elves! The fact that Tolkein created a LANGUAGE for the Elves fills me amazement. Though I love the film adaptation the book is superior.
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
Dickens' classic captivated me 10 years ago when I was in the early stages of sobriety. I instantly identified with young David and his journey of transformation from impoverished orphan to successful writer. As in all of Dickens' novels, his social commentary (especially his opinion of British classism) is evident. And I loved to hate the outwardly humble, inwardly scheming Uriah Heep and his deep hatred of his "betters".
L.A. Confidential by James Ellroy
Yes, I watched the movie first- I was a big fan of 1990's Russell Crowe. I am now also a fan of Ellroy and his L.A. Quartet. L.A. Confidential is pure L.A. noir: murder, corrupt cops, and movie stars. Like Ellroy, I was born in the City of Angels- our love for her is bone deep.
It is my wish that you enjoy these books as much as I do. If you've read them, let's discuss in the comments!
