There are a lot of books about marketing and branding for software products.
And I've read a lot of them.
But the best book on product positioning I've found is "Obviously Awesome" by April Dunford.
For a few reasons:
Reason #1: It is written from a place a real experience. April has great anecdotes, but quickly relates them to practical concepts.
Reason #2: It focuses on brand positioning for your own product, emphasizing the mindset of the customer.
Reason #3: It then shifts focus to brand positioning of your competitors, and how that context impacts customer mindset.
Reason #4: It's actionable. There are clear steps to to follow successfully position your own product.
Reason #5: It's short. At 200 pages, this is a great weekend read.
If you are at all interested in brand positioning, I can't recommend this book enough.
(And if you've read it, do you agree? What other book would you recommend on startup product positioning?)
