If you have ever watched the tv show Shameless I know you're probably saying "where are you going with this Armando"?
Well....Here's where I'm going:
There was one episode with a character by the name of Kevin Ball who gave parenting advice that really had me thinking.
Now Kevin is just one of those characters you would say "why would I take any parenting advice from him" (and honestly anyone on that show). But Kevin runs into a situation where another character, Philip aka "Lip", is having trouble figuring out how to be a parent. Philip had horrible examples of parents so he expressed to Kevin that he was terrified of becoming the same person to his newborn son.
Kevin stops Philip and says this "Lip, it's really hard to fu** up your kid up if you just love them".
Let Me Tell You Why This is Important:
We all get caught up in the silliness of thinking we need to know everything about raising a child.
It's a lot of responsibility so we get caught up in thinking "am I parenting right" or "will I be a bad parent to my kid". If you have nothing, love is a great start and the strongest foundation you can give as a parent.
This goes for the "tough" dads that don't smile too.
Your kids care about everything. The mistakes they made, the college degree, the gold medal, BUT what they care about most is if you love them.
I hope this is a helpful reminder.
One last thing to note though:
This show is VERY explicit in EVERY way, so tip #2 don't watch it with your kids. 😂
