The hummingbird in Nicaragua didn’t look at the forecast for Quincy, IL. She didn’t look at the circumstances. The weather at the equator doesn’t change. There were no external cues to alert her that it was time.

Nothing had happened to set her off.

And yet one day when her wings started spinning, Nora took off on a journey that no one would ever believe…even if she had a million words.

How could she explain it? No one witnessed her as she followed her instincts for 2,100 miles straight. Alone. Oblivious to thoughts of doing anything else.

She followed her instincts when they told her to keep flapping and she stopped when they told her to perch. She didn’t analyze a 24 hour marathon flight any differently than she considered torpor.

She just kept doing what came next.

Sometimes she would find a place to perch while she waited for the wind to blow in her favor.

The locals would ask her about where she came from. And they would laugh at her as she told them of the tropical glory of the Parrots in Playa Yankee and her home in Nicaragua called Cielo del Colibri. After their chuckles slowed, their guffaws began when one of them, trying to keep a straight face , had ask her where she thought she was headed. Their disbelieving laughs drowned out her attempts to tell them about the Eagles in the Quincy Bay and the lush beauty of Hummingbird Heaven.

Their laughs might have bothered her but Auntie Paige’s words rang in her ears…

“Nora, one day you will take a journey that only you will see.”

She didn’t ever know when or how far the wind would carry her when it blew, but she did not question, she just followed her true North.

She took the path of least resistance the whole way like Auntie Paige had told her that she would. But when she told the locals of how far she had come, they told her she was either bragging or delusional and probably both.

“That’s Impossible,” they said. “Nobody could have done that.”

Auntie Paige had warned her that it was futile to try to explain it to them.

One moment she was flitting between Cielo del Colibri and Playa Yankee with the Parrots and all the other hummingbirds with their rainbow of colors shapes and sizes. The next thing she knew, her lungs filled with the familiar scent of the Mississippi River.

Moment by moment, she continued until she saw the familiar bridge that told her she was almost to that place that was seared into her mind eye.

Suddenly her little Hummingbird heart leapt as she screamed with glee -

“See!!!

I told them it wasn’t all a dream!!”

And in the next moment, she landed on Auntie Paige’s outstretched finger and said, “Oh Auntie I finally understand what you told me.”

They said I was crazy when I told them what I have seen.

They called me a know-it-all for simply knowing the things I have learned.

They said I was delusional when I told them that you understand my language.

They told me I should be happy with what I have…as if there was some other option.

I still haven’t figured that one out -

Was there some other option available to me than this very moment?

Is there some Time Machine that would help me know what I would have hoped for right now without the context of present moment awareness?

Nope, Nora. It is what it is. The blueprint of your soul is etched on the inside of your mind’s eye.
