I post on self growth, writing and managing knowledge.

3 Ways Every Beginner Can Use So They Can Build Their Knowledge Management System Using Obsidian

Starting Obsidian to manage your knowledge can be tricky.

Because Obsidian is a linking-based app that helps you connect your thinking. Linking helps you use notes you have created in the past. With that, you are making your notes alive, not letting them be in there.

Unfortunately, most beginners don't use them which complicates the linking.

Because the linking feature can make you link many things together in one folder.

And it's not only linking that makes it tricky, there are:

  • Creating tons of folder

  • Creating fancy name tags

  • Creating folders with a broad category

  • Creating hard-to-remember notes and folder

That's why, right now, I'm going to give you 3 simple steps so you can overcome those problems.

Here's how step by step:

Step 1: Create PARA folder as your main folder

PARA lets save your notes based on actionability, not a broad topic.

PARA stands for Project, Area, Resources, Archive. With those 4 main folders, you can create other folders for each of them. Those can be "Write a blog" folder in Project or "House" folder in Area.

Step 2: Create one main note for each folder of your PARA folder and link them

Don't link between each note in each of your PARA folders here.

One main Project gets a backlink to the Area, Resources, and Archives. When it comes to linking, connect only the ones that can change such as concept, not main notes. So if you want to not link them, use Tags and Dataview without linking them.

Step 3: Create new notes and organize them based on PARA

With most of the preparation ready, you can now create new notes.

After you fill in the new notes, organize them in the main PARA folders, and create new folders in each if you want to. There's no right or wrong here, do it now, you can always improve based on the action later.
