A guilt-free way to 'read' more books

Book-reading swingers’ club

If you’re a bit like me, and curiosity is your curse, you may have the problem I struggle with: how to read more books.

Over many years of studying, I had to read some books I didn’t feel like reading at that time. I remember dreaming of days when I would read what I want when I want. And that time is now.

Not so long ago, I had an epiphany and gave myself permission to read books differently.

We’re all adults here, so let’s have more fun reading!

„Why am I reading this?”

Some books were written to be read, and others (many!) - to be merely sold.

Here is the question you need to ask yourself: why am I reading this?

Am I reading this to feel something, learn something, or impress someone?

Managing my Shiny Object Syndrome

If you’re like me, you read or listen to something; someone mentions another title, and, before you know it, you have three new books added to your collection. I now have to curate my intentions a bit.

When a title looks interesting, but I’m not yet sold on it entirely:

  • I read reviews. Sometimes I learn more from them than from the book itself.

  • I read it on Blinkist

  • I watch in-depth reviews on youtube

  • I get an audiobook

Sometimes it’s enough, and I pass. Sometimes I want more, and I’ve already primed myself for the book, and I read the whole thing.

Playful reading, the unorthodox way.

I skim, skip, scan. I read for as long as I find it interesting at any particular moment.

Sometimes it’s like speed dating. Sometimes like a relaxed, candlelit dinner, when I read painfully slow, the words tattooed into my brain.

It’s not about reading more books; It has never been. It’s about getting what you want from it.
