What is IoT Connectivity and Why Does it Matter?
Benjamin Forgan

11 years ago, I embarked on a journey to build Hologram, the world's easiest and most reliable way to connect IoT devices.

Of all the things I could've worked on, I felt this was the most important.

In 2013, the IoT wave was starting, and there was no easy way for builders to connect and manage their devices anywhere in the world. At the same time, innovators at companies big and small were pushing the edge on what connected devices could do in the real world. It wasn't the connected toasters or wearables that got me excited; it was the amazing sci-fi applications (drone delivery, computer vision, advanced security, industrial robotics), that are all becoming mainstream in 2025.

Today, we power millions of devices for over 5000 customers, including some of the world's most cutting-edge and demanding applications.

What is IoT Connectivity?

IoT Connectivity is how smart devices connect to networks and each other using technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular data to share information. These connections allow devices to transmit data to central systems and receive commands or updates remotely. The network infrastructure enables everything from simple sensor readings to complex device management, all while maintaining security through encryption and authentication protocols.

Why does IoT Connectivity Matter?

IoT Connectivity powers the world around us - from ATMs and Parking Meters to Point-of-Sale terminals and Delivery Drones.

IoT Connectivity lets you do 3 main things

  1. Command and Control: control a device remotely - any device.

  2. Monitoring and Sensing: track location, temperature, or any data you can imagine.

  3. Build the Future: anything you can dream of, from humanoid robots to flying cars to miniature nuclear reactors requires connectivity.

Over the next 30 days, I plan on writing about AI powered IoT, building connected devices, and how to leverage cellular connectivity
