I recently read about the Rule of 100.
You might already know it, so give me grace here—but it blew my mind. The basics are simple: if you spend 100 hours a year (just 18 minutes a day!) practicing any skill, you’ll be better than 95% of the world at it.
Wild, right? Eighteen minutes feels like nothing. It’s less than the time I spend scrolling ESPN or debating whether peanut butter pairs better with chocolate or a spoon. (The answer is both, by the way.)
But then I started thinking about how I spend my time, and that’s where it got uncomfortable. I had to ask myself: What am I unintentionally becoming great at? Trust me, I spend more than 18 minutes a day dialed in on things like Netflix, mindless email checks, running, working out, or Googling “bourbon pairings.”
Then it hit me: the time I spend on things I say I care about—being a great parent, a thoughtful partner, a good leader, a good friend—doesn’t stack up. That gap between what I value and where my time goes?
It’s unsettling. The incongruence speaks so loud for me, and maybe it does for you, too.
We’re all consistent at something. World-class at something. The question is, is that consistency with the right things?
Here’s what I’m sitting with: what if I intentionally set aside just 18 minutes a day for the things that align with my core values? What if I made the smallest, simplest commitment to show up—not perfectly, but consistently? Over time, those 18 minutes could shift the needle in huge ways.
So, what’s your 18 minutes? What’s one thing you can start showing up for every day this season to make a difference? Whether it’s time with your kids, practicing a skill, learning a language or just stepping away from the noise to think, let’s make it count.
We all spend our time building something. Let’s make sure it’s something that moves us forward.
