It seems like we've all been under stress for about three years.
It starts to wear on you, and you feel like it will never end. If you're prone to depression or anxiety, things can worsen. I've been through this kind of circus a few times now, and I've developed a set of tools to help.
We've been preparing since January for retirement and a cross-state move, and while I haven't handled all of my stress well, I've tried.
Here are some of the things that work for me:
Herbs, tea, and chocolate. When my dad was sick, his social worker introduced me to some herbal teas I liked. They can be very soothing.
Being outside. Sitting on the deck or the front porch is all I need sometimes. A few minutes in nature can make a difference.
Noise-canceling headphones. I'm wearing them now, playing meditation music. It drowns out the TV in the next room.
Connecting with friends, even if it's a phone call. It helps.
Doing something indulgent for yourself. This isn't my usual thing, but I got a pedicure at a high-end spa when my dad was sick. Foot massage and all. I was so relaxed. It was well worth it.
Reading or listening to something inspirational. Keep a Pinterest board or a page in your planner for quotes that make you feel good.
Gentle movement, even if it's walking around the backyard.
A comfy spot and a soft blanket.
Take care of yourself the way you would a sick child. Sometimes you need it.
