4 Digital Marketing lessons I learned by wearing different hats over 20 years.
Noob ⇢ Graphic Designer ⇢ Art Director ⇢ UX Specialist ⇢ Head of Digital Marketing
How did I switch roles?
Here are the 4 lessons that opened new doors for me…
🧵👇
First up, I believe all Digital Marketing roles have two parts:
❶ Skills — what you do
❷ Beliefs — how you approach problems
Today I’m focused on the second one…
Here are 4 Digital Marketing lessons I learned by wearing different hats over 20 years.
👇
🔹 Lesson #1: Noob ⇢ Graphic Designer
As a kid, I could draw.
But I became a Graphic Designer when I learned that design is not about how things look.
It’s about finding an elegant solution to a specific problem for a specific person.
“Who’s it for? What’s it for?”
🔹 Lesson #2: Graphic Designer ⇢ Art Director
As a Designer, I created elegant solutions.
But I became an Art Director when I learned a solution has more power when it conveys an Idea.
Leading with logic is always tempting but ideas draw people in.
“What’s the idea?”
🔹 Lesson #3: Art Director ⇢ UX Specialist
As an Art Director, my ideas helped gain attention.
But as a UX Specialist, I learned how to steer that attention.
The Buyer’s Journey from awareness to consideration to purchase has many exit points.
“Don’t make them think”
🔹 Lesson #4: UX Specialist ⇢ Head of Digital Marketing
As a UX Specialist, I focused on the customer’s needs.
But as a Marketer, I learned to focus on the customer’s beliefs.
Before they can buy, they must believe they can change.
“Who do you want your customer to become?”
There it is. Many years of head-scratching about Digital Marketing boiled down to 4 lessons.
TL;DR:
• Who’s it for? What’s it for?
• What’s the idea?
• Don’t make them think
• Who do you want your customer to become?
What do you think?
