Technique #1: Never stop learning

The worst thing we can do in life is to believe that we know it all. None of us have all of the answers and we never will.

Technique #2: Get comfortable with saying NO

In the beginning, I said yes to everything. I learned the hard way that saying yes to everything will have consequences, intended or unintended. If saying yes detracts from the focus needed to grow your business, the answer should probably be no.

Technique #3: Know what is special about your business

Understand what makes you and your business unique and be prepared to articulate that position. Being brutally clear on this will create confidence and help drive day-to-day decisions.

Technique #4: Seek out the right talent

Don't aim to be the smartest one in the room. Find incredibly, smart talented people to help grow the business.

And don't think everyone needs to be a W-2 employee. It's perfectly ok to build your talented team with freelancers, contractors, and strategic partners.

Technique #5: Strategy is key

Without a strategy, it will be easy for the business to head down the wrong track. Strategy drives implementation and implementation drives success.

Gone are the days of 5+ year strategic plans, but developing a plan for 12 months and allowing for pivots and adjustments makes good sense in this environment.

Technique # 6: Experience is critical

I'm a firm believer that gaining formal corporate experience is a huge plus before you launch your own business. But if you jump right into owning your own business, be ready to gain real-life experience through the school of hard knocks and surround yourself with mentors and coaches.

Technique # 7: Refine your Products/Services

It's easy for us all to get caught up in the shiny new toy syndrome (I am definitely guilty of this!) Innovation is important but it is equally as important to spend time refining your existing product or service. Refine and then move on to innovation.

The key takeaway here is that building a business is a daunting but rewarding task. Building a strategy based on preset goals, hiring the right talent, and building the right network and resources is a key to making it all work.
