Is 'Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles' The Best Movie of All Time?

In 1975, Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman introduced the world to 'Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles', a film starring Delphine Seyrig as a widowed housewife. Over three days, we immerse ourselves in Jeanne's daily life in Brussels, observing her through the lens of slow cinema and static shots. Akerman's film unfolds its simple yet profound narrative in long takes, inviting us into Jeanne's world without a score to guide our emotions.

  • The Beauty of Boredom: At first, the film felt uneventful, almost boring, but maybe this monotony was intentional. Akerman's deliberate pacing drew me in and made me notice the moment Jeanne's meticulous routine began to falter. This absence of action may forces us to find meaning in what may seem mundane.

  • An Unexamined Life: Jeanne's life is so rigidly structured that the slightest deviation sends her into a spiral. It seems that she has never had or wanted the opportunity to reflect on her own desires and needs. Akerman beautifully captures the stifling nature of adhering to a routine with no room for self-reflection.

  • The Tension of the Everyday: It's a reflection the invisible work of those who keep our lives going - traditionally women. Each deviation from her schedule was almost like a jump scare in a horror film, but deeper than the surprise was my realization of the constant, often unnoticed work that underpins our daily existence.

'Jeanne Dielman' may not be for everyone as it requires patience and a willingness to immerse oneself in its slow pace.

It was a profoundly unique and memorable experience that highlighted the significant impact of our daily routines. While I hesitate to call it the 'best' film ever made, as in the Sight and Sound list, it is a special movie that rewards your attention.
