A 5-Step Guide to Understanding the Grammar Stage and Unlocking Your Child's Learning Potential
@CedraCrenshaw

The Grammar Stage is the foundation upon which a successful classical education is built.

The classical model of education takes advantage of a child's natural cognitive development. At this stage, from about 4 to 11 years old, children love to memorize and mimic the world around them. The grammar stage is a tool that teaches us to think systematically about any topic by naming, attending, memorizing, expressing, and storytelling.

These 5 core habits are essential to learning anything:

Step #1: Naming

Name and define what something is, its parts, and what categories it belongs to. Children love to ask what and why. As parents we must help them to define the things they see and experience around them.

Step #2: Attending

Use all 5 senses to observe and compare things. Children notice things all around them everyday. Parents must help children to look and listen closely.

Step #3: Memorizing

Memorize facts and how things are related. Use these data points to connect and expand new and old ideas. In Classical Conversations, CC, my homeschool community, students memorize 400 - 500 pieces of data each year across 6 subject strands: Math, Latin, Science, English, History and Geography. They also memorize an historical timeline, fine arts data, and are encouraged to memorize poetry and Bible verses.

Step #4: Expressing

Express what you remember through various forms of art like recitation, drawing, dancing, singing, crafting, etc. In CC, we utilize all forms of movement and expression to help students internalize information. In addition, students give at least 24 three minute presentations each year. The consistency of public speaking helps students develop poise, body control, proper voice volume, speed, and eye contact.

Step #5: Storytelling

Read many good books together and have students narrate back what they remember. Families are encouraged to read together and students are encourage to read a lot!

How could you incorporate these aspects of the grammar stage into your home?
