The Different Types of Training Partners That We All Have

  1. "Rest Round Guy" - If you don't have a rest round guy, you are the rest round guy. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this.

  2. "Death Match Guy" - This person either started Jiu-Jitsu around the same time as you, challenges you the most, or just has the game that was designed to shut you down. Your friendly rivalry feels anything but friendly in moments when you're at war with this person.

  3. "Super Technical Guy/Girl" - This person might not be bigger than you and they might not be stronger than you, but for some reason, you just can't figure them out. They are simply better at BJJ than you.

  4. "Guy Who Rag Dolls You" - This person could be the best competitor in your gym or they could just be a guy who is a belt rank above you. You are probably their rest round, and it's likely that someone else is rag-dolling them. This, Simba, is the circle of life.

  5. "The Final Boss" - This could be the same as the Guy Who Rag Dolls You, but The Final Boss is your coach, whose feedback matters to you. The person who, if you pass their guard, will give you the validation you need to reach Valhalla. Too bad it's not going to happen.

  6. "Guy Who Coaches You During the Roll" - You don't pay them for lessons, but you do get plenty of them from this "friend".

  7. "The Stranger" - You've never seen them before. They could be a first-day trial class guy or they could be a visiting black belt on a work trip who wants to blow off some steam. Do you want to roll the dice?
