Deep down, we all want simplicity. Sure there are plenty of things that we want that are excess to the life we live, but we don't want things to be complicated, we want things to be simple. Here are five benefits of seeking simplicity.

1. Simplicity Frees Us from Materialism

Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 6:24 challenge us to choose between serving God or wealth, emphasizing that our devotion cannot be divided. Embracing simplicity helps to cut through the distractions of materialism, freeing us to fully commit to serving God.

This shift from material wealth to spiritual richness allows us to live more fully for God, relying on Him to meet our needs rather than our possessions.

2. Simplicity Encourages Reliance on God

The wisdom of Proverbs 30:8-9 advocates for moderation in wealth, that we may not be tempted to deny God or steal in desperation. By choosing a simple lifestyle, we place our trust and dependence on God rather than our resources.

Begin by taking stock of your belongings. Evaluate what items are essential and what you can live without. This process is not just about decluttering your space, but about realigning your environment with your spiritual values. Simplifying your surroundings can help reduce distractions and foster a more focused and contemplative life.

2. Simplify Your Commitments

Reflect on your daily commitments and identify which activities align with your core values and which merely add noise and haste to your life. Prioritizing engagements that enrich your relationship with God and others allows you to live more intentionally and with greater purpose.

3. Practice Generosity

Generosity is a key expression of simplicity. By choosing to give rather than accumulate, you resist the culture of excess and align yourself more closely with biblical teachings. Generosity not only blesses others but also cultivates a spirit of openness and community.

4. Embrace Quiet and Solitude

Set aside regular times for solitude and silence. Use these moments to engage with Scripture, pray, and listen for God’s guidance. The discipline of quietness can help you to slow down and make space for God in the midst of a busy life.

5. Cultivate Contentment

Work actively to cultivate a spirit of contentment. This can involve daily practices of gratitude, such as keeping a gratitude journal or regularly acknowledging your blessings.
