1. Create case studies for the industry you want to work in

By creating case studies for a specific industry, you build industry specific knowledge that makes you far more valuable as a candidate.

2. Build EXCELLENT case studies

Don't stop after 2-3 case studies, especially if you feel they're only mediocre.

Iterate on what you've built.

And keep iterating/building until you have 2-3 EXCELLENT case studies.

Putting in the time here will eventually yield results.

3. Become a storyteller

Stories are far more memorable than straight facts.

By communicating your work as stories, you'll make the content far more engaging and you show your ability to effectively communicate design decisions.

4. Spend time building your UI chops

I can't tell you how many subpar portfolios I've seen.

No one tells these juniors that they need to spend more time honing their UI skills.

If you want to stand out, your work has to look excellent.

Keep practicing and getting feedback.

5. Be specific about who you're targeting

Look at these two offerings:

"I help companies build intuitive, memorable experiences"

VS.

"I help enterprise SaaS companies build intuitive, memorable experiences."

By niching down, you automatically start showing expertise.

6. Seek aggressive feedback from experts

Use ADPList.org and LinkedIn networking to continually get feedback from experts.

This is how you'll grow the most!

Eventually, if you keep making changes based on their feedback, you'll be a kickass UXer.

7. Build your "WHY" reflex

Talk about the WHY behind your design decisions.

There should be a reason for every decision you make and each method you use.

You don't do something just because.

The UX process isn't a checklist.

Back up your decisions with reasoning and data.

8. Share your personality

Set yourself a part by being YOU.

Make your case studies and portfolio uniquely yours.

Don't conform to what everyone else is doing.

People want to work with others they like.

Show yourself off as your quirky, likable self!
