Why Research communication goes wrong...
COMMunity

Once you know something it is very difficult not to know it.

Worse you start forgetting that everyone else doesn’t know the same stuff you know.

Obviously, they don’t have the same degree as you, but EVERYONE knows what a quark is right? Or a black hole? Or that vaccines are safe…

This knowledge bias, leads to many, many communication issues.

Have you ever had a song in your head and hummed it?

Someone asks “what's that song”

And you say “you know, the one that goes dum dee dummm humm”

“Nope, not getting it”

“Yeah, you are! Everyone knows it dum dee dummm humm!”

“nope”

“Come on, it's easy!”

Eventually you get frustrated by how thick they are being, how could they not get Back St Boys!?

This is classic curse of knowledge.

You know what you were humming, you assumed it was easy for them to guess from your hums. When they don’t get it you get cross at them, they also get cross at you and communication breaks down.
