4 Signs You Might Be Outgrowing a Relationship
Danica Burke

Outgrowing relationships is a normal part of life. Sometimes we hold onto a relationship longer than we should because the process of letting go is uncomfortable and we feel guilty.

Why we outgrow relationships

As individuals, we are always evolving. Our lives are evolving. Unfortunately, we all evolve at different rates and times and this means not everyone will evolve with us.

Some relationships (friendships, romantic, professional) will have enough common growth and connection to last a lifetime. Other relationships, however, will lose their connection.

This can make us feel guilty and sad even though sometimes it's inevitable and just the way life works.

Signs you might be outgrowing a relationship

  • Conversations that used to flow easily, now feel more forced. You don't have as much to talk about anymore.

  • It feels as though your priorities and values no longer align. This can feel like your connection has shifted and you are each in a different space now.

  • The past is the only thing you have in common. When it comes to the present and the future, you find little connection.

  • You feel they don't understand you anymore. Perhaps you have experienced some emotional growth and are changing up your lifestyle and they are not in the same place as you.

What to keep in mind

It's painful to let people go and see relationships fade. It doesn't mean we don't think about these people or wish them well.

But life is about challenging ourselves and growing through different experiences. Sometimes this requires new relationships in our lives and requires us to let go of others.
