Focus & Fragmented Attention
Deepak K🚢

Constant connection and being exposed to push notifications via various digital devices and mobile app badges vying for your attention has created a technology-induced problem of a lack of focus and fragmented attention.

According to this oft-quoted study from UC Irvine, it can sometimes take up to 23 minutes to regain focus after an interruption to work.

Over the last few years, I've tried to become a bit more self-aware of when I am getting distracted and have tried a few ideas such as coffee, instrumental music, and wearing earphones to discourage people from interrupting me. I've lately been considering setting up the specific app and website blockers using Freedom.to or RescueTime.

I've also been interested in reading research articles on techniques that help restore the ability to focus and these are the suggestions I have identified so far

Attention Restoration Therapy (A.R.T.)

Exposure to nature via walks/hikes is supposed to help overcome mental exhaustion, act as a restorative activity and help us regain the ability to focus.

While I enjoy hiking (for itself), I've also tried to keep A.R.T. in mind and ensure I do go out into nature whenever possible.

Reading

Reading books is supposed to help increase the ability to focus and concentrate on a specific topic for an extended period and that improved attention span carries over to other areas of life as well.

Meditation

Building a meditation habit and practicing regular meditation is supposed to change the structure and functioning of the brain, increase attention span and memory and improve the ability to focus.

In case you know of any other techniques which are supposed to have a long-term impact to improve your focus and attention span, please leave a comment with your suggestions.
