Every Thursday is a curious trash day.
By 9 am, I'm sitting at my desk, coffee in hand. My desk faces north and to the east is my office window, which overlooks the street. So I see almost everything that happens right outside.
Moments from when I sit at my desk, the trash collector will drive by, which isn't so amusing. What is fun is what happens next. As the trash collector stops in front of my driveway to pick up my week's trash, a young man follows behind him, filming the pickup sequence.
Let's call him Tim.
Tim looks to be 5'10 and in his early to mid-twenties. He maintains a short beard. His uniform is a ball cap, an oversized shirt, jeans, sneakers, and dark-rimmed eyeglasses. His gear is old school: a camcorder.
Once Tim films my trash pick, he follows the truck to my neighbors. And for the rest of the morning, I'll see him chasing the truck (almost as if the driver is trying to lose him), filming each trash pickup one by one.
What's Tim doing?
And what's the driver think about their weekly rendezvous in Lone Mountain?
I've contemplated waiting on my porch Thursday mornings to ask Tim about his curious project. Since I haven't, I'm left with my imagination.
Is he making a documentary about The City of Phoenix's trash services?
My neighbor at the corner of Hillary and 21st has left their old Volkswagen rotting in the sun since Hana, and I moved here four months ago.
And the trash builds up in front of the various renovated homes in the neighborhood. But as far as I can see, I'm unaware of any issues worth documenting.
Does he run a trash pickup ASMR channel on YouTube?
People make millions by filming videos of stuffing their faces with blue candy.
A video of the morning after would be more entertaining, but who am I to judge? And why would trash-collecting be any different?
I'll take the sounds of trash collecting over someone crunching, munching, slurping, and burping as they binge-eat yellow-colored foods.
Maybe he really love trash pickup trucks?
So much so that he rides his bike around the neighborhood for hours, meticulously documenting each pickup?
I'm sure I have no idea.
I believe he waits for the truck at the corner of 22nd and Greenway in the early morning. The truck comes from the North and runs down south until turning onto the next street.
This is my observation from my office window.
Perhaps Tim will enlighten me soon enough.
