How to be a Good Ancestor - 3 Things to Think About
Dermot O'Brien

The future is in our hands RIGHT NOW!

"We are the ancestors of the future and we bear the responsibility of creating a world our grandchildren will be proud of." Standing Bear

1. Awareness - what we do now matters

We need to get it into our heads that our decisions about how we live now might create challenges for future generations. We must consider the implications when we are deciding what to build, what to extract, what to destroy.

2. Our Gift - what we leave to future generations

We can literally take action now that future ancestors will celebrate in the story of humans. Imagine a future where they talk about the time humans changed the course of history because of how they responded to climate change, pollution, consumption, cultural diversity, globalisation, conflict.... we could be those humans!

3. Newgrange Thinking - long term-ism

In Ireland we have a Neolithic monument called 'Newgrange' that is 5,200 years old and predates Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. It has a mind blowing story around its connection with the Winter Solstice and more importantly it is still standing today. We need to bring a 'long term-ism' attitude to how we manage our world rather than the current 'short term-ism' approach. An obsession with instant gratification might not serve future generations at all.

"it's 3.23 in the morning and I can't sleep because my great great grandchildren ask me in my dreams, what did you do while the earth was unravelling?'. Drew Dellinger

Are we ready for some 'deep time' humility?

This might be the hardest moment in human history to be telling people that they are really not that significant at all in the greater scheme of things! However, if we see our threads of significance flowing into a future where our childrens, childrens children who are yet to be are relying on us.... what then?
