Setting up a writing portfolio is always a chicken and egg situation for beginner content writers.

No writing client. So, no writing portfolio. Well, not necessarily true.

I wrote over 30 SEO-focused articles on Medium before landing my first client - a gaming company working out of Portugal. But in today's high-octane world of B2B content writing, basic SEO pieces won't cut the mustard.

Here are four ways to stand out as a beginner B2B content writer:

Test two SaaS tools and write an in-depth comparison guide

Yes, get the trial version of two SaaS tools and use them for a week or more.

And then write an in-depth comparison guide objectively comparing both tools. Share what you enjoyed in each tool, what you disliked, and your preferred tool.

Never written a comparison guide before?

Google comparison guides to get a sense of how they are structured.

Find video interviews that inspire you and repurpose them as articles

Brand journalism is the future of content marketing.

Brands are always on the lookout for writers who can watch interviews and repurpose them into written text that everyone wants to read.

You'll need some practice to get going with this tactic.

Start a newsletter

Did I hear you say no way?

But this is the easiest way to build a portfolio. Each newsletter topic is an article you can share with a potential client. Not to mention the attention you'll get for running a newsletter.

For example, I started Efikò to document my journey as a beginner content writer.

Write study teardowns

Did you learn how to use bucket brigades?

Write an in-depth teardown for beginners like yourself. Go into the weeds here -- how to use bucket brigades, examples of bucket brigades, and resources for those who want more.

The all-in-one writing platform.

Write, publish everywhere, see what works, and become a better writer - all in one place.
