Time Blocking vs Time Boxing
David Kennedy

The other day a question was asked in an online group I am a part of, asking what techniques we to stay productive. I gave a quick answer stating I use a combination of time blocking and time boxing.

Today I’d like to break these down for you.

Time Blocking

Time blocking is when you split your day up into blocks where you dedicate time to a specific task. Examples could be working out, deep work, and family time. These blocks of time allow you to focus on only what the block is for. Time blocking has been a game-changer for me when it comes to staying focused on various work, and family efforts.

Time Boxing

Time boxing is when you set a time limit to complete a task or set of tasks. This is more rigid than time blocking where I may set 30min to complete a specific task no matter what. I generally turn to this when I need to focus on specific tasks that to be done in a timely fashion. Also helps me avoid Parkinson's Law (work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion).

Choosing the right technique

Which technique should you use? It depends on your preferences and tasks. If you thrive on structure, time blocking might be your go-to. If you’re motivated by deadlines, give time boxing a try. Personally, a mix of both works best for me.

I’d love to hear how you manage your time! Share your experiences and tips in the comments below. Let’s learn from each other and keep pushing towards our goals!
