Do you want to get started working in Program Management?
I have been working in Program for many years now. What I can tell you (from experience) is that to work in this industry, you need to understand the business context deeply, master cross-functional communication, and develop solid organizational systems.
So, here's the one tip I would give you if you wanted to pursue a similar career path:
Start by volunteering to coordinate small, cross-functional projects in your current role.
Here's why:
Program Management isn't something you can learn from books or videos alone – it's a craft that requires hands-on experience. By taking on small coordination responsibilities, you'll develop the core muscles every PM needs. You'll learn how to:
Navigate different working styles and personalities
Break down complex initiatives into manageable pieces
Create and maintain project documentation
Handle unexpected challenges and dependencies
Build influence without direct authority
Keep multiple stakeholders aligned and informed
The beauty of this approach is that it's low-risk but high-reward. Even if you make mistakes (and you will), the stakes are lower than if you were managing a significant program. Yet, each small project adds to your toolkit and credibility. Over time, you'll build a track record of successful coordination to help you transition into a formal PM role.
Remember: every senior program manager starts by managing something small. What matters is taking that first step and learning from each experience.
Or, said differently:
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
