Have morning routines become toxic?

Unfortunately, we've gotten so addicted to the idea of a perfect routine that we beat ourselves up for not getting it right.

Here are three ideas for having a morning that actually serves you! 🧵👇🏻

#1 - Give up the 15-step routine ✅

Youtube would have you believe you're a failure unless you:

Meditate, have a cold shower, write morning pages, plan every block on your calendar, read non-fiction, go for a nature walk, etc.

You get the point.

Start by letting all of that go.

#2 - Learn from Benjamin Franklin

In his autobiography, Franklin printed out his daily schedule. Look at the morning routine of one of the most successful people in history.

He spends time from 5 - 8 asking, "What good shall I do today?"

Note that Franklin doesn't have a massive checklist of guru hacks. Instead, he focuses all of his energy on that one question. "What good shall I do today?" He then plans his study and his workday around the answer.

#3 - Create Generous Art

Consider Seth Godin's advice in his book, The Practice.

He teaches us to create generously every day. If you wake up intending to make good art and then ship it to the people you hope to help, let that be your mark of a well-lived day.

Bonus tip:

Make yourself hard to reach via email and phone, especially in the morning.

Enjoy the morning hours. They're a time to craft your art, not complete a checklist.

Do good work and be kind to yourself today.
