There are a lot of books about Art & Creativity.
And I've read loads of them.
But the best book I've found is Think Like An Artist by Will Gompertz.
For a few reasons:
#1. He knows his stuff. As a former BBC Arts Editor, Will's interviewed & observed countless artists, directors and novelists, musicians, actors and designers. His knowledge is vast, his opinions credible.
#2. It has some clever viewpoints and interesting chapters. An obvious point to make in a book review, but I enjoyed reading Chapters like "Artists Are Sceptics". They do not take things at face value. Instead, they are curious, like scientists; they inspect, interrogate, dissect and reassemble, in their own uniquely creative way. It flattered my creative soul to hear that "Artists Are Capable of Thinking Big Picture and Fine Detail." And examining the controversial viewpoint that "All Schools Should Be Art Schools".
#3. The book is compact and the paper feels nice. It's a touchy, feely thing.
#4. I liked flicking through to find the full-page pull-quotes. Gems like: "Success is often down to plan B" (anon). Or: "There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept." (Ansel Adams). And: "Art is not about itself, but the attention we bring to it". My personal fave: "The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud" (Coco Chanel).
#5: It's a B&W book with a little fold-out concertina of colour prints at the back. 'Cos what good is a book without pictures, anyway?
If you are at all interested in Art, I can't recommend this book enough.
(And if you've read it, do you agree? What other book would you recommend for creative types?)
