Most of us think our mind works like a camera.
We believe that we are looking out at a real world that is separate and independent from us. We think we are seeing the outside world as it is. In this common view, it often feels like we are just passengers along for the ride in an indifferent world.
But this is a complete misunderstanding.
Our mind doesn't just record what we experience, it creates it!
For example, we think we see a world full of colors and objects, but colors and objects are only ever created in the mind as an interpretation of sensory data.
Neuroscientists use the term inference to explain how the brain uses a generative model to compute the probable causes of sensory data. What we experience is actually an internally generated model of the world, not the world itself. The colors and objects and sounds and sensations that we experience are created on the inside and then projected onto our consciousness in such a way that they appear to be "out there". We subsequently believe that our emotions and feelings come from the world that we just created.
When we fail to see this system at play, we erroneously feel that we are at the mercy of an outside world and we can easily become victims of our situations, circumstances, and other people.
100% of your experience of life comes from inside your head.
I know that this probably runs counter to everything you have ever learned about the world.
I wish I could wave a wand and give you this understanding, but you have to see it for yourself. The best way I have found to insightfully see the truth of this understanding is to reflect on your own experience of life. To that end, here are a few questions to ponder:
Question #1: How would your life be different if you absolutely knew that you created 100% of your experience?
Question #2: How would this understanding change your relationship with yourself, other people, and your world?
Question #3: What movie would you create if you knew you that were the producer? Would it be a thriller, an adventure, a romantic comedy, or a horror story? What movie are you creating now?
You see, you aren't just a passive spectator in the movie of your life, you are the author, director, and producer.
Understanding this truth changes everything!
