Kaizen is a Japanese term that translates to continuous improvement or seeking to change.

Kaizen is derived from two Japanese root terms - Kai and Zen.

Kai = Change

Zen = Virtue

Together it creates the philosophy of continuous improvement and has been applied in current businesses. For example, in Japan, many businesses implement Kaizen as the company’s culture. This could mean reducing any wasted effort and being keen on any mistakes spotted early on. Or it’s setting up for the next person in charge during a shift change. Informing people and adjusting for any concerns is considered Kaizen.

Many businesses outside of Japan implement Kaizen, into their workplace. Take for example Trader Joe’s, the main philosophy is Kaizen, and you’ll notice them throughout the store. On your next visit to Trader Joe’s, certain items are introduced during different seasons. Some of the products are returning and some are completely brand new. In some instances, the items on the shelf are moved to a different spot and utilize space in the store.

Another example, is Nestle's implementation of Kaizen, by reducing the waste in their facilities. Keeping the waste down has resulted in saving money for the business. Additionally, it avoids the build-up of waste in the facility to ensure the product is thoroughly taken care of.
